Every great instructor reaches a turning point. It is the moment you realize that everything you know about your art is not the same as knowing how to teach it. The two skills are related — but they are not the same skill. This book is about the second one.
You can perform a perfect roundhouse kick. You can break boards, win tournaments, hold a black belt for twenty years. You can know every technique in your system from memory. None of that means you can teach. Teaching is a separate discipline — one that requires the same deliberate practice as any physical skill, and one that most instructors were never formally trained in.
A seven-year-old told me once that he wanted to punch like a superhero — the actual physics of it: the way a superhero punch sends shockwaves out in every direction. He was describing rotational force. He understood it intuitively. All I had to do was meet him where he was. That is the job.
For eight months, a student carried confusion. She had been told to rotate your hips in every class, every belt test, every sparring session — and she nodded each time. She thought she was doing it. On the day she finally understood — really understood, in her body — she looked at me and said: why did nobody just say that? That night changed how I teach.
